Washington, D.C. – Triple-digit heat index values are gripping the D.C. metro and surrounding regions this Friday, with temperatures feeling as hot as 107°F in some areas, prompting an urgent Heat Advisory through 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory stretches across the District, nearly all of central and northern Maryland, northern and central Virginia, and parts of the West Virginia panhandle. Heat index values are expected to remain between 102°F and 107°F during the peak afternoon hours, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents from Arlington to Frederick, down through Fairfax, Culpeper, and into Eastern Allegany County should limit outdoor activities and stay in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Those working outside should take frequent breaks, wear light clothing, and stay hydrated.
Metro transit riders and outdoor workers are especially vulnerable during the evening commute, as high heat lingers well past sunset. Cities like Baltimore, Manassas, and Martinsburg may see relief only after 9 p.m.
Cooling centers are open in major counties including Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Loudoun. Officials urge residents to check on elderly neighbors and pets.
More heat is possible this weekend—stay tuned for further advisories.
