Washington, D.C. – A blistering combination of extreme heat and severe thunderstorms threatens much of the Mid-Atlantic Tuesday, with a heat index peaking at 107°F in La Plata and widespread flash flood risks from Baltimore to Washington, D.C.

According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory remains in effect across central and eastern Maryland, D.C., and northern Virginia, where apparent temperatures will range from 104° to 107° through early evening. A Flood Watch is also in place for much of the I-95 corridor, as heavy storms could dump multiple inches of rain in short bursts, triggering flash flooding during the evening commute.

In Baltimore and surrounding suburbs like Westminster and Bel Air, the heat index is forecast to reach at least 106°, while D.C. and Leesburg are also under the threat of damaging winds, downpours, and flooded roadways. Afternoon thunderstorms could rapidly intensify, especially in urban and low-lying areas.

Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable individuals. Avoid flooded roadways, charge electronics, and keep weather alerts enabled.

The National Weather Service warns additional advisories may follow into Wednesday, with thunderstorms likely continuing overnight.
