Baltimore, MD – Skywatchers across Maryland, northern Virginia, and Washington, D.C., could be in for a rare treat tonight as the Northern Lights may be visible under mostly clear skies. The ongoing solar storm that produced vivid auroras across the U.S. Tuesday night remains active, with another chance for Mid-Atlantic residents to catch the colorful glow after sunset.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, conditions will stay breezy and dry through Thursday, with daytime highs ranging from the upper 50s to low 60s and clear skies overnight — a combination that improves aurora visibility.
The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center continues to monitor a G3-level geomagnetic storm, strong enough to extend auroral visibility far south of its typical range. Viewing will be best north of D.C. and Baltimore, facing toward the northern horizon in dark, rural areas.
If clouds stay minimal, visibility could extend into central Maryland, northern Virginia, and southern Pennsylvania. Peak times for viewing are after 8 p.m. through early Thursday morning.
Forecasters say the mild pattern continues through Friday before clouds and rain chances return over the weekend. But for tonight, clear and cool conditions could make for perfect aurora-watching weather across the region.
