Washington, DC – Thunderstorms will jolt the Washington region tonight, kicking off a wet spring weekend that ends with temperatures plunging into the 40s.

Residents across the D.C. metro should prepare for lightning, gusty winds, and possible downpours Friday afternoon and evening. According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms may begin as early as 5 p.m., especially north of the city. While rainfall totals will remain light, isolated pockets of heavy rain and thunder are expected to disrupt evening travel.

By Friday night, temperatures will cool to the mid-50s, and another round of showers and storms is likely. Drivers on I-395 and I-95 should be cautious of slick roads and reduced visibility through the evening commute.

Saturday will bring scattered morning showers with gradual clearing. Highs will reach a mild 76°F. But the real shift comes Sunday—temperatures will peak near 82°F early, then tumble into the upper 40s by nightfall as another round of showers passes through.

The week ahead brings calmer, cooler conditions. Monday will be partly sunny with a high near 60°F. Tuesday and Wednesday both look dry and cooler, with highs near 51°F and 57°F respectively.

Safety Tips:

  • Secure outdoor furniture before storms hit.
  • Avoid travel during Friday’s evening commute if possible.
  • Use caution when driving through wet roads and areas prone to ponding.

This weekend’s spring pattern brings typical April swings—make sure your umbrella and jacket are both within reach.
