Charleston, WV – West Virginia National Guard officials have identified the soldier killed in a line-of-duty shooting in Washington, D.C., as Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old member of the West Virginia Army National Guard. Beckstrom was shot near the Farragut Square Metro Station on November 26 while performing an assigned security mission in the nation’s capital.
According to the West Virginia National Guard, Beckstrom was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital, where she died on November 27 from injuries suffered in the attack. Guard officials described the shooting as “senseless and entirely unprovoked,” emphasizing that Beckstrom was protecting the public when she was struck by gunfire.
Beckstrom enlisted in the Guard on June 26, 2023, and served with the 863rd Military Police Company. Leaders said she embodied integrity, professionalism and commitment to service, distinguishing herself as a military police officer. She was serving as part of Operation D.C. Safe and Beautiful, a mission that supports the safety and security of the District of Columbia.
A 2023 graduate of Webster County High School and a resident of Summersville, Beckstrom’s loss is being felt across the Mountain State and the broader One Guard Family. Officials noted she volunteered for the D.C. assignment and was known for her dedication to helping others.
Maj. Gen. Jim Seward, Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard, issued condolences on behalf of the state, saying Beckstrom’s service reflected the highest ideals of the Guard. “We grieve alongside her family and honor her memory by carrying forward her commitment to service, integrity and excellence,” he said.
Federal authorities have not yet released additional investigative details. Guard officials are asking the public to respect the privacy of Beckstrom’s family during this difficult time.
