Jonesborough, TN – A Jonesborough man is facing multiple criminal charges after deputies say he led authorities on a dangerous late-night encounter that nearly resulted in serious crashes earlier this week.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies attempted a traffic stop along Highway 107 on Saturday night, December 27, after spotting a dark blue Ford with a license plate that did not match the vehicle. Authorities say the driver refused to stop, accelerating at excessive speeds and swerving into the emergency lane while nearly striking two other vehicles.
Sheriff Keith Sexton said the driver was later identified by a witness as James Robert McInturff, 44, after the license plate was traced back to his residence. Deputies located McInturff shortly after midnight on Monday, December 29, in the 400 block of Upper Sand Valley Road, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
McInturff has been charged with three counts of Reckless Endangerment, Felony Evading Arrest, Driving While Revoked (second or more offense), Altering Plates, and Failure to Maintain Control. Authorities say the reckless driving incident posed a serious risk to other motorists traveling the highway at the time.
He is currently being held at the Washington County Detention Center without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, December 29.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information is encouraged to contact the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
