Jonesborough, TN – A Kingsport man is facing a felony charge this week after Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies say he allegedly fabricated a report about being pulled over by someone impersonating an officer on Nov. 2.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the Highway 93/Ridge Road area of Fall Branch in the early morning hours of Nov. 2 after the suspect, identified as James P. Ramsey, Jr., 23, allegedly claimed he had been stopped by someone pretending to be law enforcement. According to Sheriff Keith Sexton, Ramsey provided a full suspect description and stated the driver was operating a white Ford Crown Victoria equipped with blue lights.
Investigators attempted to verify the reported police impersonation but, according to deputies, inconsistencies quickly emerged. The Sheriff’s Office said that surveillance footage from the area during the time of the alleged incident did not match Ramsey’s claims. Deputies reported that the discrepancies raised immediate concerns about the validity of the report.
According to investigators, Ramsey was interviewed again on Dec. 2. During that follow-up conversation, deputies say he admitted to lying about the incident. He was then charged with filing False Reports, a felony offense in Tennessee.
The Sheriff’s Office reports that Ramsey is currently being held at the Washington County Detention Center on a $1,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in Washington County General Sessions Court on Dec. 3.
Residents in Washington County, Kingsport, Fall Branch, and surrounding areas are encouraged to contact authorities if they have additional information relevant to the case.
