Jonesborough, TN – A traffic stop near a Washington County school led to the arrest of a Johnson City man after deputies allegedly found drugs, counterfeit money, and a loaded pistol inside the vehicle Thursday morning.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies working school zone traffic on Highway 107 pulled over a vehicle on Thursday, Nov. 21, after noticing an unregistered tag. Deputies say the driver, 19-year-old Braxton Malachi Roberts, did not have a valid license.

According to Sheriff Keith Sexton, deputies detected a strong smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle during the stop. A female passenger reportedly admitted to smoking inside the vehicle to avoid smoking near a child who was also present.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies located multiple counterfeit $100 bills, including one folded bill that allegedly contained a white powdery substance consistent with cocaine. Several pieces of marijuana were reportedly discovered in the center console, and deputies say a loaded pistol was found wedged between the passenger seat and the center console.

Deputies also reported finding $345 in cash on Roberts. A baggie containing 13.5 grams of suspected cocaine was found on the female passenger, and Roberts allegedly admitted the cocaine belonged to him.

Roberts was transported to the Washington County Detention Center. His bond was set at $16,000, which he has since posted. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 24.
