Washington County, OR – A 72-year-old woman was safely rescued Sunday afternoon after becoming lost while picking mushrooms in a remote area of Washington County near Barney Reservoir, authorities said.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded just before 3 p.m. on November 23, 2025, following a 911 call about a distressed mushroom picker who was unable to exit a slick and steep area. Deputies from both Washington and Yamhill counties joined the initial search effort.

When early searches proved unsuccessful, additional Search and Rescue (SAR) teams from several nearby counties—including Yamhill, Clackamas, Columbia, and Hillsboro—were called in, alongside the Oregon State Police. Drones and a K9 unit were also deployed to help locate the woman.

After several hours, SAR teams used GPS coordinates from drone footage and ground searches to pinpoint her location. The woman had used a whistle she brought along to alert rescuers to her position. Rescuers then used a rope system to reach her safely.

Aside from being cold, wet, and thirsty, the woman did not report any injuries. The Sheriff’s Office commended the collaborative efforts of all responders and reminded outdoor enthusiasts to always prepare for weather, bring essentials like a whistle and food, and inform others of their plans before venturing into remote areas.
