Washington County, MD – Law enforcement officers conducted a large-scale DUI and traffic enforcement sweep across Washington County on Thanksgiving Eve, one of the year’s heaviest drinking nights, resulting in dozens of stops and multiple arrests.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Strategic Enforcement Unit partnered with the Boonsboro Police Department Wednesday night to increase patrols and deter impaired driving across the region. The operation was partially funded through an MHSO DUI grant.

Deputies reported 42 traffic stops, 51 warnings, and 46 citations during the effort. Four people were arrested on DUI charges, and officers made an additional weapons violation arrest after allegedly finding a loaded stolen handgun during a stop.

The sheriff’s office also confirmed that two K-9 scans were conducted and one consent search was completed as part of the operation.

Boonsboro Police officers contributed 10 additional traffic stops and 11 violations as part of the joint enforcement push.

Officials said the Thanksgiving Eve initiative was designed to reduce crashes, disturbances, and impaired driving at a time when road activity typically spikes due to holiday gatherings and late-night travel. The agencies reported that the strong law enforcement presence helped maintain roadway safety throughout the night.

Residents are encouraged to plan safe transportation during the holiday season as DUI enforcement efforts continue.
