Hagerstown, MD – A Tennessee man has been charged with multiple counts of attempted murder after a road rage confrontation escalated into gunfire Tuesday evening in Washington County, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to calls of shots fired around 5 p.m. on September 10, 2025, near the AC&T Fuel Center on Hopewell Road in Hagerstown. The incident began as a dispute between a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on I-70 near I-81. Both vehicles continued onto I-81 before exiting onto Halfway Boulevard. Authorities said the situation turned violent when the tractor-trailer driver allegedly opened fire on the pickup truck while traveling on Hopewell Boulevard.

Three bullets struck the pickup truck, but no one inside was injured. Law enforcement officers from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Hagerstown Police Department later located the tractor-trailer and identified the driver as Willie Laurence Wooten Jr., 33, of Tennessee. A firearm was found on the floorboard of the truck, according to investigators.

Wooten is facing charges that include attempted first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment from a motor vehicle, use of a firearm in a violent crime, and multiple handgun violations. He is currently being held at the Washington County Detention Center without bond.

Authorities emphasized that all individuals charged with crimes are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
