Salem, IN – A Washington County bicyclist was airlifted to the University of Louisville Hospital after a collision involving an off-duty Salem police officer Sunday afternoon, according to Indiana State Police.

Authorities said the crash happened around 4 p.m. at the intersection of Old State Road 56 and North Canton Road near Canton. The Salem Police Department requested Indiana State Police assistance at the scene, with Trooper Brett Walters leading the investigation.

According to preliminary findings, Officer Tony England, who was off duty and driving a department cruiser westbound on Old State Road 56, was attempting to turn left onto North Canton Road. At the same time, bicyclist Terry L. Eagle, 60, was riding eastbound on Old State Road 56. Investigators said Officer England allegedly failed to see the bicycle while turning, striking Eagle in the intersection.

Eagle sustained injuries and was first taken by ambulance to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Salem before being airlifted to Louisville. Police said he remains in stable condition.

Authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
