Montesano, WA – A section of Grays Harbor County was temporarily shut down Thursday after deputies responded to a report of a possible explosive device near Simmons Road and Monte Brady Road.

According to the Grays Harbor Sheriff’s Office, deputies quickly established a safety perimeter and called in support from Grays Harbor County Roads and the Washington State Department of Transportation to secure the area.

The Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad and the U.S. Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team later arrived to assess the object. After conducting an X-ray examination, authorities determined the device was an inert piece of ammunition dating back to World War II—specifically from a “Super Bazooka.”

Officials said the shell posed no active danger but reminded residents not to handle suspicious or unfamiliar objects. “If you come across an item that could be dangerous, do not touch or move it,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “Contact law enforcement immediately.”

The department thanked the public for their patience and the multiple agencies involved for their quick response.
