Washington, D.C. – A winter weather system is expected to bring a mix of snow and freezing drizzle across parts of Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia late Thursday night into Friday, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory along and south of Interstate 64.
According to the US National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, snow will develop overnight and continue into Friday afternoon, with 1 to 2 inches of accumulation possible in some areas and a light glaze of ice forming by late morning. Temperatures are forecast to hover near freezing, making untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks slippery during the Friday morning commute.
The advisory remains in effect from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, covering regions from Charlottesville and Fredericksburg northward toward Washington and Baltimore. Areas such as Staunton, Orange, and Harrisonburg could see the heaviest totals near 1 inch or slightly higher.
Forecasters caution that freezing drizzle may linger into Friday evening, potentially creating patchy black ice. Motorists are advised to reduce speed, allow extra travel time, and monitor updated forecasts in case advisories expand northward toward central Maryland.
Behind this system, colder air will return for the weekend, keeping highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s through Saturday.
