Waldorf, MD – A Waldorf man was taken into custody this week after detectives uncovered multiple neglected dogs and several illegal firearms inside his home.
According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, detectives and animal control officers executed a search warrant on September 2 at a residence in the 3500 block of Twinbrook Drive as part of an investigation into animal cruelty and possible dogfighting. Authorities reported finding three dogs inside the garage living in feces and urine-soaked crates, while two more were chained outside without proper shelter.
Officials said all five dogs, believed to be Pitbulls, were extremely thin, showed visible injuries and in some cases carried chains around their necks weighing nearly 15 pounds. The dogs were transported to an emergency veterinary clinic for treatment. Investigators also seized evidence consistent with potential dogfighting, including a treadmill outfitted with dog toys and large amounts of antibiotics.
Deputies reported recovering four firearms inside the home belonging to the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Michael Haywood of Waldorf. Authorities said Haywood is prohibited from possessing firearms. He was arrested and transported to the Charles County Detention Center where he was charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and related offenses. Additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
A district court commissioner released Haywood on personal recognizance. Detective K. Dunn has been assigned to the case.
