Wakefield, Virginia — A strong cold front moving through eastern Virginia today will bring gusty winds and sharply colder temperatures to the Wakefield area.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, west to northwest winds will increase behind the front, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph during the day. Afternoon highs are expected to remain in the 30s, but colder air and persistent winds will make conditions feel significantly colder.

Forecasters say skies will clear tonight, allowing temperatures to drop into the teens to low 20s across much of the region. Combined with lingering winds, wind chill values are expected to fall into the teens overnight, increasing the risk of cold stress for anyone outdoors for extended periods.

The strongest wind gusts are expected today through early evening, while the coldest temperatures will occur overnight into early morning. Any exposed or unsecured outdoor items may be blown around during peak gusts.

While no precipitation is expected, the National Weather Service cautioned that wind-driven cold alone can create hazardous conditions, particularly for high-profile vehicles and those working outdoors.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose items, dress in layers, and limit time outdoors during the coldest overnight hours.

This alert is especially relevant for evening commuters, overnight drivers, and outdoor workers, as the combination of wind and cold will peak after sunset.
