Wakefield, Va. – Morning commuters across southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina are contending with pockets of dense fog, particularly in the Maryland Eastern Shore counties and along the Virginia–North Carolina border. Visibility in some areas remains limited, but the fog is expected to lift within a few hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, increasing heat and humidity will settle in by midday, with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s and heat indices peaking in the lower to mid-90s. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop between 1 and 8 p.m., with the greatest chance for heavy downpours in far southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Some isolated spots could see more than 2 inches of rain, though most areas will receive less.
Drivers are urged to use caution this morning due to low visibility and to monitor conditions later today for sudden, intense rainfall. Outdoor activities may be disrupted by lightning and gusty winds associated with the storms.
Storm chances remain in the forecast through tonight, with additional rounds possible later this week as humidity stays high.
