Wakefield, VA – Temperatures across eastern Virginia and northeast North Carolina will remain mild through Christmas Day before a strong cold front ushers in cooler air late Thursday into Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, temperatures on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be very similar across the region. Highs are expected to range from the lower 50s along the Eastern Shore to the mid-60s across interior northeast North Carolina, continuing an unseasonably mild holiday pattern.

A chance of showers is forecast during the morning hours on Christmas Day, particularly across central and eastern portions of the region. Rainfall amounts are expected to be light, but wet roads could affect early holiday travel.

Forecasters say a strong cold front will move through the area late Thursday into Friday. Behind the front, temperatures will trend cooler, with highs on Friday ranging from the upper 30s to upper 40s. Northwest winds are expected to increase, adding a brisk feel to the cooler air.

In northern portions of the forecast area, there is also a chance for rain to mix with snow or a light wintry mix as colder air arrives Friday, though widespread winter impacts are not expected at this time.

The milder conditions ahead of the front may be especially noticeable for holiday gatherings and travel, while the shift to cooler weather late in the week could impact commuters and outdoor plans.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts for changes in rain timing and the potential for wintry precipitation in northern areas as the cold front approaches.
