Wakefield, VA – Critical fire weather conditions will take hold across Virginia and northeast North Carolina today as strong westerly winds and very low humidity combine to create an environment where fires can spread rapidly. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for areas west of the Chesapeake Bay, while the Eastern Shore remains under an Increased Fire Danger Statement.

According to the National Weather Service Wakefield, relative humidity values will drop to 20–25% this afternoon behind a cold frontal passage. At the same time, westerly winds will strengthen to 15–25 mph, with gusts reaching 30–40 mph across central and eastern Virginia. The strongest winds are expected along the Eastern Shore, coastal areas, and open terrain.

Officials warn that any fire that starts today could spread quickly and become difficult to control. Activities such as burning yard debris, discarding cigarettes, using power tools that generate sparks, dragging trailer chains, or running equipment over dry grass can ignite fires under these conditions.

Fire weather concerns will be highest from early afternoon through early evening, when humidity and wind gusts peak. Areas including Richmond, Petersburg, South Hill, Emporia, Franklin, Tappahannock, Suffolk, and Norfolk are highlighted in the Red Flag zone.

A 72-hour wind forecast shows today as the most significant period, with wind gusts gradually decreasing late tonight into Monday. Nonetheless, officials urge residents to remain cautious into the evening as dry conditions persist.

Travel may also be impacted as high-profile vehicles encounter strong crosswinds on bridges and open highways such as I-95, Route 58, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

Residents are strongly advised to avoid all outdoor burning and secure loose outdoor items. Local fire agencies may issue additional restrictions throughout the day.
