Blacksburg, VA – A major rain system is set to bring heavy downpours and potential flooding across southwest Virginia through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch remains in effect until Sunday night, with excessive rainfall likely to impact roads, rivers, and low-lying areas. Rain will begin Saturday night and continue into Sunday, with total accumulation between a quarter and half an inch. Wind gusts up to 31 mph are also expected.

Drivers should exercise caution on highways and rural roads, particularly in flood-prone areas such as Route 460 and I-81. Rain will taper off Sunday night, but standing water and slick roads may persist into Washington’s Birthday on Monday.

Looking ahead, a cold blast midweek could bring snow and icy conditions to the region. Residents should stay updated on weather alerts and avoid flooded areas.

Sunday: Rain and wind gusts up to 31 mph; possible flooding.

Monday (Washington’s Birthday): Mostly sunny but cold, with highs near 36°F.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, high of 41°F, before temperatures plummet overnight.

Wednesday: Snow likely, followed by bitter Arctic air.

Thursday: Continued cold with highs struggling to reach 30°F.

Residents should prepare for extreme cold and monitor weather alerts as conditions change.
