Richmond, VA – The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of central and eastern Virginia, along with portions of northeast North Carolina, effective from 1 a.m. Friday through 1 a.m. Saturday.

According to the Weather Service, a mix of snow and freezing rain will begin late Thursday night and continue through Friday. Snow accumulations of one to two inches are expected, along with a light glaze of ice, creating slick and hazardous road conditions.

The advisory area includes major population centers such as Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell, Fluvanna, Goochland, and Brunswick Counties, extending south into Northampton County, North Carolina. Forecasters warn that the Friday morning and evening commutes could be impacted by icy patches and reduced visibility.

Officials are urging drivers to slow down, increase following distances, and use extra caution on bridges and overpasses, which tend to freeze first. Motorists can check current road conditions at 511Virginia.org or DriveNC.gov.

Conditions are expected to improve by Saturday morning as temperatures rise above freezing.
