Gloucester, Va. – Snow-covered roads and slick bridges are creating hazardous travel across eastern Virginia early Monday, with several more inches expected before the storm winds down this evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday for the Northern Neck, Middle Peninsula and parts of the lower Chesapeake Bay region. Counties including Westmoreland, Richmond, Northumberland, Lancaster, Gloucester, Middlesex, Mathews, King and Queen, Essex, James City and York can expect an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow, with 1 to 2 inches in Williamsburg and York County. Wind gusts up to 35 mph will blow snow across roadways and reduce visibility at times.

Bridges and overpasses along Route 17, Route 33 and U.S. 360 are likely to become slick as temperatures hover near freezing. The Monday morning commute faces the greatest risk for icy patches and reduced traction.

The Virginia Department of Transportation urges motorists to check 511 for updated road conditions and delay non-essential travel. Drivers should allow extra stopping distance and carry emergency supplies.

Snow will taper late Monday afternoon, but slippery conditions may persist into the evening before improving overnight.
