Northampton County, Virginia – Drivers along Virginia’s southern Eastern Shore could face sudden whiteouts and wind-driven snow by 1 p.m. Sunday as blizzard conditions develop, threatening travel on Route 13 and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel through Monday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday until 7 p.m. Monday for Northampton County. Snow totals between 3 and 6 inches are expected, with wind gusts reaching 45 to 50 mph. Those winds will blow and drift snow across open roadways, sharply cutting visibility and creating slick surfaces.
While snowfall amounts are lower than areas farther north, the combination of strong winds and coastal exposure increases the risk for hazardous travel across Cape Charles, Exmore and along U.S. 13. Elevated roadways and bridge approaches may ice over quickly Sunday afternoon, especially as temperatures remain below freezing.
The Monday morning and evening commutes could see delays or closures if visibility drops to near zero. Gusty winds may also bring down small tree limbs and lead to scattered power outages.
Residents should avoid non-essential travel, secure loose outdoor items and prepare winter emergency kits with blankets, water and fully charged phones. If stranded, stay with your vehicle and call 511 for updated Virginia road conditions.
Blizzard conditions are expected to continue until 7 p.m. Monday, and additional advisories could follow as the storm progresses.
