Charlottesville, VA – A winter storm is set to impact central and northern Virginia starting Tuesday morning, bringing heavy snow and ice that could make travel hazardous through Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall will begin lightly Tuesday morning before intensifying in the afternoon and evening. Total snow accumulation is expected to range between 4 to 6 inches, with locally higher amounts possible. By Tuesday night, freezing rain may mix in, creating dangerous road conditions. Ice accumulation could reach up to one-tenth of an inch.

The storm is expected to affect Albemarle, Nelson, Greene, Madison, Rappahannock, Orange, Culpeper, and Spotsylvania counties. NWS warns that slippery roads could significantly impact Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes.

Residents are urged to delay travel if possible and drive with extreme caution if necessary. Officials advise maintaining extra distance between vehicles, avoiding sudden stops, and ensuring vehicles are winter-ready.

Authorities recommend staying updated on weather forecasts and preparing for potential power outages due to ice buildup on trees and power lines.
