Richmond, VA – A winter storm will spread across central and eastern Virginia early Friday, bringing 1 to 3 inches of snow and a light glaze of ice, according to the US National Weather Service in Wakefield.
Forecasters say snow will begin before dawn Friday and continue through mid-afternoon, affecting the morning commute across Richmond, Petersburg, Farmville, and Williamsburg. Temperatures will stay below freezing for much of the day, allowing snow to stick to untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks.
By midday, the system is expected to shift to a wintry mix or freezing drizzle, which could lead to additional icing and slippery conditions through the evening. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 1 a.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday, covering central Virginia and portions of inland northeast North Carolina.
Travelers are urged to allow extra time and use caution, especially during rush hours. The Weather Service notes that confidence is “moderate” for measurable snow accumulation and that localized totals may reach up to 3 inches in parts of Louisa, Petersburg, and South Hill.
Temperatures are forecast to stay in the 30s through Friday night before slowly warming over the weekend. Residents should also ensure pets have shelter as the cold lingers into Saturday morning.
