Blacksburg, VA – Residents in southwest Virginia should prepare for gusty winds and snow showers today as a strong system moves through the region. Winds may reach speeds of 55 mph in higher elevations, creating hazardous conditions, especially along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Advisory is in effect until early Thursday morning. Snowfall is also expected, with up to three inches possible in Tazewell County and southeast West Virginia. The advisory warns of potential power outages and falling tree limbs. Drivers are urged to secure outdoor decorations and proceed with caution, as slick roads and reduced visibility are likely.
Temperatures will plummet throughout the day, falling into the mid-30s by evening. Thursday brings clearer skies but colder conditions, with highs near 37°F and overnight lows in the 20s. Winds will persist, though they will ease slightly, averaging 15-25 mph.
The five-day outlook for Blacksburg includes mostly sunny skies on Friday and Saturday, with daytime highs in the mid-40s and nighttime lows in the upper 20s. Another system may bring rain to the area by Saturday night, leading to an 80% chance of precipitation by Sunday.
