Blacksburg, VA – Strong northwest winds are impacting parts of Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina today, with gusts powerful enough to create travel hazards and potential power disruptions, especially in higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, are expected throughout the day, particularly along the higher elevations of the southern Blue Ridge. Winds are forecast to gradually diminish later tonight.
The strongest gusts are expected during daylight hours across southwest Virginia, portions of southern West Virginia, and northwestern North Carolina. Areas near ridgelines and exposed locations will likely experience the most intense conditions.
Forecasters warn that gusty winds may blow around unsecured outdoor objects, make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles, and lead to downed tree limbs. These impacts could result in isolated power outages, especially in wooded or mountainous areas.
Motorists traveling along mountain highways and exposed routes are urged to use extra caution, as sudden gusts can affect vehicle handling. Residents are also advised to secure loose outdoor items such as holiday decorations, trash bins, and patio furniture.
The wind event follows recent cold weather across the region, which may increase the likelihood of brittle tree limbs breaking under strong gusts.
Conditions are expected to improve overnight as winds weaken, but officials recommend remaining cautious through the evening hours.
