Monterey, VA – Residents across the western highlands of Virginia and eastern West Virginia are waking up to strong gusty winds early Monday, as the National Weather Service (NWS) in Baltimore/Washington keeps a Wind Advisory in effect until 8 a.m. EDT.

According to the NWS, west winds between 20 and 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are affecting Western Highland County in Virginia and Western Grant and Western Pendleton Counties in West Virginia.

Forecasters warn that the strong winds may blow down tree limbs and cause isolated power outages, especially in higher elevations and open areas. Drivers of high-profile vehicles are urged to use extra caution, as crosswinds could make steering difficult along mountain roads.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items such as patio furniture and trash bins to prevent them from being tossed by the wind. Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise as the storm system moves eastward.

The gusty weather follows a cold front that pushed through the region overnight, ushering in cooler and drier air to start the workweek.
