Welch, West Virginia – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across far southern West Virginia and adjacent Southwest Virginia, with accumulating snow expected to create hazardous travel from Friday morning through late Saturday evening.

Snow will overspread the region early Friday, becoming steady at times through Saturday. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected across McDowell County in West Virginia and Buchanan and Dickenson counties in Virginia. The most significant impacts are expected during the Friday morning and evening commutes, when untreated roads may quickly become snow-covered and slick.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, snowfall rates may briefly intensify at times, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of accidents on area roads. Routes including WV-16, WV-83, U.S. 52, and connecting mountain roads may become difficult to navigate, especially during periods of heavier snow.

Emergency management officials urge drivers to use caution or avoid non-essential travel during peak snowfall windows. Road conditions may deteriorate rapidly, particularly in higher elevations and along shaded mountain stretches where snow and ice linger longer.

Residents should prepare for winter travel disruptions and allow extra time to reach destinations. According to state transportation agencies, drivers are encouraged to check updated road conditions by dialing 511 before heading out. Those who must travel should keep emergency supplies in vehicles, including a flashlight, food, water, and warm clothing.

The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through late Saturday evening, with lingering slick spots possible into early Sunday as temperatures remain cold. Additional updates may be issued as the storm evolves.
