Virginia – Calm air and scattered sunshine greet the New River Valley this morning, but a volatile weather pattern is lining up just to the west. By Monday afternoon, a powerful spring storm line could sweep across the region with strong winds and heavy rain.

Temperatures sit near 42°F early this morning in Blacksburg, with clear skies and light winds around Virginia Tech and Montgomery County. Sunshine will push temperatures toward 60°F later today, offering a mild start before clouds thicken tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, rain develops later tonight with steady showers likely before the Monday morning commute.

The atmosphere becomes more unstable through midday Monday. Temperatures briefly warm into the upper 50s, helping fuel showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon.

Meteorologists warn some storms may produce damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall, especially along the Interstate 81 corridor from Radford through Christiansburg and Blacksburg.

Drivers should expect bursts of heavy rain and gusty winds during the afternoon travel period. Wet pavement and strong wind gusts could reduce visibility along mountain stretches of I-81 and Route 460.

Behind the front, conditions shift rapidly Monday evening. Temperatures drop into the lower 40s by late afternoon, then continue falling overnight.

Rain could mix with snow late Monday night, particularly across higher elevations in southwest Virginia and nearby West Virginia. Little accumulation is expected, but a light dusting remains possible on colder surfaces.

By Tuesday — St. Patrick’s Day — skies brighten but temperatures stay chilly. Afternoon highs only reach the mid-30s, and gusty winds will keep the air feeling brisk.

Sunshine returns midweek, and temperatures begin a gradual climb. By Thursday, highs rebound toward the upper 50s, signaling early hints of spring across the Appalachian region.
