Virginia – Cold air pools in the valleys as clouds thicken over the ridges, setting the stage for a high-impact winter weather setup. Across southwest Virginia, conditions are lining up for snow, sleet, and freezing rain that could significantly disrupt travel from Saturday into early next week.
The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Winter Storm Watch from Saturday morning through Monday afternoon. Forecasters say precipitation will arrive mainly as snow, with sleet and freezing rain mixing in at times. The most hazardous period appears likely Saturday night through Sunday, when temperatures remain well below freezing.
In Blacksburg and surrounding mountain communities, light snow may develop Saturday, then intensify into Saturday night. Snow accumulation of one to three inches is possible, with additional sleet and ice adding weight to trees and power lines. Gusty winds could worsen impacts, increasing the risk of scattered power outages.
Sunday brings another round of winter weather. A wintry mix is expected during the morning, possibly shifting back to snow by afternoon. Roads may become snow-covered and icy quickly, especially along I-81, Route 460, and higher-elevation roads. Travel could become difficult or even impossible at times.
Cold air lingers behind the system. Any snow that partially melts during daylight hours may refreeze rapidly after sunset, creating flash-freeze conditions. Sidewalks, parking lots, and untreated roads could turn slick with little warning.
Residents are urged to prepare now. Consider delaying travel, charge devices, and keep winter supplies handy. If travel is unavoidable, slow down and allow extra time.
Looking ahead, bitter cold settles in early next week as Arctic air expands east. Additional precipitation chances return midweek, keeping winter hazards in play.
