Virginia’s New River Valley is socked in this morning, with thick fog clinging to hillsides and headlights glowing in the mist along US-460. Visibility has dropped to a quarter mile in spots, and temperatures hover near 33 degrees, cold enough for slick patches where moisture lingers.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, dense fog will continue through about 9 a.m., especially in valleys and near rivers. Motorists should use low beams, slow down, and expect sudden visibility drops. Any damp surface could briefly turn icy in shaded areas.

Sunshine breaks through late morning, pushing highs to 54 degrees. Roads improve quickly, and the afternoon feels calmer. Tonight turns partly cloudy with patchy fog redeveloping after 2 a.m. Lows settle near 37.

Saturday delivers a stronger spring tease. Highs climb to 64 degrees after early fog lifts. Sunday stays mild with a high near 59 before clouds increase late.

Colder air returns Sunday night. By Monday, a 50 percent chance of rain and snow develops, with highs near 40. Light wintry precipitation could create travel issues, even if amounts stay modest. Monday night brings a chance of rain and snow before a possible freezing rain mix toward daybreak Tuesday, when lows dip near 31.

Temperatures rebound into the upper 40s Tuesday and near 60 by midweek. Longer-range trends favor above-normal warmth heading deeper into early March.
