Roanoke, VA – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon today for much of southwest and central Virginia, northwest North Carolina, and southeast West Virginia, where freezing rain and icy conditions continue to make roads slick and hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, affected areas include Roanoke, Lynchburg, Blacksburg, Bedford, Appomattox, Bluefield, Boone, and Lewisburg, along with counties stretching from the New River Valley through the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains. Ice accumulations are expected to remain below one-tenth of an inch, but that’s enough to make bridges, overpasses, and sidewalks dangerously slippery.

Forecasters report that temperatures near freezing will keep roads icy through the late morning hours, particularly along I-81, U.S. 460, and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, avoid sudden braking, and use caution on hills and curves. Pedestrians are also advised to watch for icy patches on stairs and sidewalks.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve by midday as temperatures rise above freezing and precipitation transitions to rain.
