ANNANDALE, Va. – Drivers across Northern Virginia should prepare for changing weather Monday as showers and possible storms move into the region. Commuters on I-495 and I-95 could face wet pavement and reduced visibility during peak travel times through Tuesday night.

According to the National Weather Service, Monday will start partly sunny with highs near 82, but rain chances increase after midnight. A few showers may develop before dawn Tuesday, with thunderstorms possible by Tuesday evening. Gusty winds and brief downpours could make travel hazardous across Fairfax County and surrounding communities.

Tuesday brings the most widespread rain, with a 40 percent chance of showers during the day and a 50 percent chance of storms at night. Temperatures will hold near 74, but humidity will rise, making conditions feel sticky. Overnight lows will dip into the lower 60s, keeping the air damp and unsettled.

By Wednesday, stronger thunderstorms may develop, particularly in the afternoon. Some storms could bring heavy rain, raising the risk of localized flooding in low-lying areas and along smaller roadways. Travel along Routes 236 and 50 could be impacted by ponding water and slower traffic. Residents should avoid unnecessary driving during downpours and keep phones charged in case of power outages.

Conditions improve late in the week, with sunshine returning Thursday and Friday. Highs will settle in the lower 80s, offering a brief taste of calm fall weather.

More showers remain possible by Saturday, but no major severe threat is expected. Advisories could be updated as the week progresses.
