Richmond, Va. – Virginians are getting a brief break from summer’s hottest weather today, but the clock is ticking before oppressive heat returns across the state. Tuesday will bring sunny skies, with highs ranging from 85°F to 88°F in Richmond, Norfolk, and most inland cities—much lower than what’s coming later this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, humidity will remain manageable through Wednesday. That means today is an ideal time to finish outdoor chores, hit local parks, or take advantage of cooler evenings for exercise. Roads, schools, and businesses are operating normally, with no heat-related advisories in effect for Tuesday.

Communities across the region, including Goochland, Petersburg, and the Peninsula, can expect comfortable conditions this afternoon. Coastal spots like Cape Charles and Ocean City will also enjoy sunshine and mild breezes, with highs in the low 80s.

But don’t get too comfortable. Forecasters warn that a powerful heat wave will move in by Thursday, sending heat indices soaring above 100°F—potentially reaching 105°F in Richmond, Bowling Green, Emporia, and Hampton Roads. Residents should take time today and tomorrow to check air conditioning, gather water bottles, and review plans for pets and elderly family members ahead of the heat.

Tonight, temperatures will dip into the upper 60s and low 70s, providing cool sleeping weather before the humidity climbs again.

The National Weather Service urges everyone to monitor updates and prepare for more extreme weather by Friday and Saturday.
