Blacksburg, VA – This weekend brings warming temperatures and sunny skies, but an increased fire risk looms Sunday as gusty winds sweep across the region. Temperatures will climb into the 50s and 60s on Sunday, accompanied by west wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph in higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service, dry soils combined with strong winds heighten the fire danger Sunday afternoon. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose items as conditions could lead to rapid fire spread and potential property damage.
Saturday will be calm and sunny with highs around 44 degrees. Winds remain light at 5 to 8 mph, creating favorable outdoor conditions. However, Sunday’s gusts will ramp up alongside the milder weather, marking the beginning of a wetter pattern. Rain is likely Sunday night, with chances increasing to 70% overnight.
Next week brings more significant weather changes. Rain is expected Monday, with a high near 54 degrees. Tuesday sees additional rain, while colder air moves in by Wednesday, raising the possibility of rain and snow showers. Temperatures drop into the mid-40s midweek, and nighttime lows could dip below freezing.
Drivers along I-81 and nearby routes should prepare for reduced visibility and slippery roads early in the week due to rain. Plan ahead for the changing weather and take precautions, especially during peak wind gusts on Sunday.
