VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Frost clings to car roofs and blades of grass this Veterans Day morning as the first true winter chill spreads across eastern Virginia. A raw northwest wind whips down the coast, rattling flags and sending cold spray off the Atlantic. The region woke to temperatures near freezing, with parts of the inland Tidewater area dipping into the upper 20s — a freeze warning now in effect through 9 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, subfreezing temperatures as low as 27°F could damage sensitive vegetation and threaten unprotected pipes. Residents across Norfolk, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach are urged to wrap outdoor plumbing, cover plants, and bring pets indoors. Gusts up to 30 mph will make the morning feel even colder.

A few light rain or snow showers may linger across the Southside early, but accumulation is not expected. Skies clear rapidly through midday as high pressure strengthens, bringing sunshine and a quick warm-up. Afternoon highs recover into the upper 40s, and by Wednesday, the coast rebounds into the upper 50s under bright skies.

The rest of the week trends mild and dry — ideal for holiday travel prep or late-season yard cleanup. By Friday, many areas along I-64 and the Chesapeake Bay could see highs near 60°F. A return to more typical November weather is expected this weekend, with no major rain systems in sight. After today’s icy start, the Virginia coast enters a stretch of calm, sunny, and much warmer fall weather.
