Blacksburg, Va. – Strong west winds are sweeping across southwest Virginia and the central Appalachians today, bringing gusts up to 40 mph that could topple small tree limbs and cause isolated power outages. The National Weather Service says the windiest conditions will occur late this morning through the afternoon before easing after sunset.

According to the National Weather Service office in Blacksburg, sustained winds of 25–35 mph with higher gusts are expected across higher ridges and open terrain, especially along the Blue Ridge Parkway and into parts of West Virginia and northwest North Carolina. Drivers of high-profile vehicles on I-77, I-81, and U.S. 460 should use caution in crosswinds, particularly on bridges and mountain passes.

Tree branches weakened by earlier rain could snap, briefly disrupting power in rural areas. Outdoor decorations and trash bins should be secured, and those planning outdoor activities are advised to prepare for cooler, blustery conditions. Afternoon highs will reach the upper 50s to low 60s before temperatures fall quickly under clear skies tonight.

Lighter winds and calmer fall weather are expected Thursday, with a bright and cool finish to the workweek ahead.
