HOT SPRINGS, Va. – A Freeze Watch remains in effect for the Allegheny Highlands and Greenbrier Valley late Thursday night through Friday morning, with temperatures expected to dip to around 29°F between 2AM and 9AM EDT Friday. The National Weather Service said this cold blast could end the growing season for much of western Virginia and eastern West Virginia.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the watch includes Bath County, Virginia, and Eastern and Western Greenbrier Counties, West Virginia, covering towns such as Hot Springs, Lewisburg, Alderson, and Rainelle. A Frost Advisory remains in place through 9AM Thursday morning before the colder air arrives overnight.
Residents should protect sensitive vegetation and plumbing ahead of the freeze. Gardeners should bring in potted plants or cover tender crops, while homeowners are urged to drain hoses and wrap outdoor spigots. Agricultural officials warn that several hours of subfreezing temperatures could kill unprotected crops and outdoor plants.
Motorists traveling through mountain valleys and higher passes should be prepared for frosted windshields and icy bridges early Friday. Sunshine and calmer winds will return during the day, keeping highs in the upper 40s to near 50°F. A slow warming trend is expected this weekend with dry weather continuing.
