WAKEFIELD, Va. – Elevated fire danger is in effect today across much of central and southern Virginia, where dry air, gusty winds, and minimal recent rainfall have created conditions favorable for rapid fire spread. The National Weather Service in Wakefield warns residents to avoid outdoor burning and use caution with any open flames or heat-producing equipment.

According to the NWS Wakefield office, relative humidity levels will drop to between 25 and 30 percent this afternoon as westerly winds increase to 10–15 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph. The heightened fire risk is expected between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. across central and southern Virginia and portions of northeast North Carolina. Even small sparks could ignite dry grass or brush given the ongoing lack of significant rainfall.

Officials emphasize that Virginia’s fall fire season is now underway, running from mid-October through late November. Residents are urged to postpone debris burning, avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, and properly extinguish cigarettes. Those using fire pits or grills should keep water or sand nearby and monitor shifting winds.

The fire danger may increase again Thursday if dry, breezy weather continues. Cooler temperatures and slightly higher humidity are expected by Friday, offering a brief break before another dry weekend.
