VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – A calm, clear start to the day will give way to a cold, messy system Friday as the season’s first wintry mix edges toward the coast. The chill in the air this morning is a warning sign for what’s ahead — icy rain, wet roads, and gusty winds through early Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, light snow or a wintry mix could begin early Friday morning before shifting to all rain by midmorning. Though no major accumulation is expected, forecasters say a light dusting is possible north and west of the metro area, particularly in Hampton Roads and inland Currituck County. Temperatures will hover in the mid-30s early before climbing to near 46°F by afternoon, keeping most of the precipitation liquid.

Travelers along I-64, Route 13, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel should use caution — slick spots may develop where surface temperatures lag behind. Wind chills in the upper 20s will make it feel even colder as moisture builds in.

Rain continues through Friday evening before tapering off early Saturday. Skies stay mostly cloudy through the weekend, with highs in the upper 40s and lows around 40°F. Sunday looks brighter but cool, setting up a drier stretch early next week.

Meteorologists are keeping an eye on mid-December trends (Dec. 11–17), which show colder Arctic air possibly dipping south again, bringing renewed chances for snow or frost along the Mid-Atlantic corridor — just in time for early holiday travel.
