Richmond, Virginia – A growing winter storm threat is putting much of Virginia on alert this weekend, with snow, sleet and pockets of ice increasingly likely to disrupt travel and daily routines from late Saturday through early Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, confidence is rising that a significant winter system will impact the region, though exact snowfall and ice amounts are still coming into focus. Forecasters say impacts could begin as early as Saturday, with the most hazardous conditions expected Sunday into Sunday night.
Statewide, central and eastern Virginia face the highest risk for heavy snow and sleet accumulation. Areas from Richmond and Petersburg east through Williamsburg and the Northern Neck are highlighted for significant travel disruptions, including reduced visibility and snow-covered roads. Interstates 64 and 95 could become difficult to navigate, especially overnight Sunday.
Farther southeast, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach and coastal communities, lighter snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain may lead to ice buildup. Even limited ice accumulation can create dangerous conditions on bridges, overpasses and untreated roads.
Drivers are urged to avoid non-essential travel, prepare vehicles now and keep phones charged in case of power outages. Officials stress that additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the system gets closer, with updates expected throughout the week as the storm track becomes clearer.
