ANNANDALE, Va. – Northern Virginia residents can expect a mix of fall rain and sunshine as a passing cold front sweeps across the region late Sunday. The National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington warns that gusty winds and periods of rain will briefly interrupt the area’s pleasant October stretch before drier, cooler air returns for the workweek.

Showers are expected to increase Sunday afternoon and evening, with rainfall totals between a half and three-quarters of an inch. South winds will strengthen ahead of the front, gusting up to 30 mph along I-95 and I-66. Drivers should anticipate reduced visibility and slick roadways during the heaviest showers, especially for those heading toward D.C. or Fairfax County during the evening commute.

By early Monday, the front clears east, allowing sunshine to return. Highs will reach the mid-60s under blue skies, with a light west breeze delivering crisp fall air. Conditions remain dry through midweek—perfect for outdoor plans, leaf viewing, and Halloween decorating as temperatures settle near 70°F by Tuesday.

Looking ahead, meteorologists say the rest of October should stay mild, with cool mornings and warm afternoons. No major storms are forecast this week, giving residents a well-timed window to enjoy the peak of fall color around Northern Virginia’s parks and trails, including Burke Lake and Great Falls.
