Roanoke, VA – A wave of unseasonably warm weather will push across Virginia starting Friday, with many areas expecting highs in the upper 70s to upper 80s through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, southwesterly winds will usher in moist and warm air beginning Friday, triggering a notable temperature spike across southwest, south-central, and western Virginia. Cities including Roanoke, Danville, Lynchburg, and South Boston may see temperatures between 84°F and 88°F by Saturday and Sunday—around 15 to 20 degrees above average for mid-April.

The warmup is expected to peak on Sunday before a possible cold front arrives late that afternoon into Monday, which may bring scattered thunderstorms. However, forecasters note uncertainty around the strength and timing of that front.

Residents should prepare for increased outdoor heat exposure, especially those in urban areas like Roanoke and Martinsville. Stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours.

This warming trend could impact spring planting schedules and increase short-term fire danger in dry brush areas. Those planning travel or outdoor events should monitor updated forecasts for possible storm development late Sunday into early next week.
