Blacksburg, VA – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of southwest and central Virginia, as well as parts of southeast West Virginia, with snow accumulations between 1 and 5 inches expected from early Friday morning through Friday evening.

The advisory includes cities such as Roanoke, Blacksburg, Wytheville, Lynchburg, Covington, and Lewisburg, covering areas along and west of Interstate 81 and extending into the Blue Ridge and Greenbrier Valley.

According to the NWS, the snow will begin after midnight, becoming steady around daybreak Friday. Heavier bands are likely west of I-81, where totals of 2 to 5 inches are expected, while 1 to 3 inches is forecast farther east toward Roanoke, Bedford, and Lynchburg.

Forecasters warn that slippery and snow-covered roads will make travel hazardous throughout the day, particularly during the Friday morning commute and again in the evening as temperatures fall below freezing.

Motorists are advised to slow down, allow extra time, and check road conditions at 511Virginia.org before traveling. Snow is expected to taper off by Friday night, but patchy ice may linger into early Saturday morning.
