Richmond, Virginia –
Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes could disrupt travel and power across much of Virginia through Monday evening, with more than 70 counties and independent cities placed under a Tornado Watch until 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 67 includes a large portion of the state from Northern Virginia to Hampton Roads and south toward the North Carolina border. The watch covers major population centers including Richmond, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax.

Storms moving northeast across the state may produce tornadoes, wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, and intense downpours that quickly reduce visibility on major roadways. The Interstate 95 corridor from Petersburg through Richmond and Fredericksburg could see rapidly changing conditions during the afternoon commute.

Northern Virginia communities including Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and Arlington counties remain in the watch area where rotating thunderstorms may develop quickly. Farther east, coastal cities such as Norfolk, Newport News, Hampton, and Virginia Beach could see strong winds and brief tornadoes as storms approach the Chesapeake Bay region.

Emergency officials urge residents to keep weather alerts enabled and identify a safe interior room away from windows in case warnings are issued. Drivers should be prepared for sudden heavy rain and strong wind along Interstates 64, 95, and 81.

The tornado watch remains in effect across much of Virginia until 7 p.m. Monday, and additional warnings may be issued as storms intensify through the afternoon and early evening hours.
