Wakefield, VA – A soaking, beneficial rainfall is expected across central and eastern Virginia and northeast North Carolina tonight into Friday morning as a strong cold front moves through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, widespread rainfall totals between 0.50 and 1 inch are likely from tonight through early Friday. The rain is expected to be steady at times and may help ease dry conditions, though ponding on roads is possible in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
Forecasters say conditions will also turn breezy, with wind gusts between 25 and 35 mph possible overnight and continuing into Friday. The combination of wet roads and gusty winds could lead to hazardous travel, especially during the Friday morning commute.
Areas expected to see the heaviest rainfall include Richmond, Petersburg, Williamsburg, Fredericksburg, Farmville, South Hill, and communities across Hampton Roads, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Newport News. Parts of northeast North Carolina, including Elizabeth City, will also be impacted.
While widespread flooding is not anticipated, officials caution that reduced visibility, slick roads, and standing water may create localized travel issues. Gusty winds could also blow around unsecured outdoor objects and lead to isolated power interruptions, especially where soils become saturated.
Rain is expected to taper from west to east Friday morning as the cold front exits the region. Behind the front, conditions will gradually improve later Friday, though breezy conditions may linger.
Residents are advised to use caution while driving overnight and early Friday, secure loose outdoor items, and continue monitoring local forecasts for updates.
