Virginia – Cold air settles into the New River Valley this morning, stiff and quiet, as clouds begin to thicken over the ridgelines. The calm feels temporary. Winter weather is lining up fast, and the weekend could turn slippery in a hurry.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon for southwest Virginia, including Blacksburg. Heavy snow is possible, with total accumulations between 4 and 8 inches, especially south of Route 460.
Temperatures stay cold today, topping out in the mid-20s, keeping any early flakes from melting. Snow chances increase Friday afternoon, then ramp up Friday night as the system strengthens. Snow becomes likely overnight, with visibility dropping at times and roads turning slick quickly.
Saturday appears to be the most impactful period. Snow is likely through the day, with gusty winds developing by evening. Blowing and drifting snow could sharply reduce visibility on area roads, including U.S. 460 and Route 114. Travel could become very difficult, especially during the Friday evening commute and again Saturday.
By Sunday, snow chances taper, but cold conditions linger. Highs stay in the teens, and untreated roads may remain icy well into the day. Residents should plan ahead, limit travel if possible, and prepare for changing conditions.
Looking ahead, the storm exits early next week. Cold air holds briefly, then a gradual warm-up begins with drier weather expected.
