Roanoke, VA – Residents across west and central Virginia are being urged to stay weather-aware Tuesday as forecasters warn of isolated thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts.

According to the US National Weather Service in Blacksburg, an upper-level system will bring the chance for scattered showers and storms this afternoon and evening. While coverage is expected to remain limited, some storms may become strong enough to cause localized power outages.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of Virginia under a Level 1 of 5 Marginal Risk for severe weather. The primary concern is isolated damaging wind gusts, with the greatest risk stretching from the Roanoke Valley through central Virginia.

Officials note that the region has seen relatively few severe weather events in recent weeks, making today’s outlook a timely reminder to have multiple ways of receiving alerts. Weather radios, smartphone notifications, and local broadcasts are all recommended.

The most active period for storms is expected late Tuesday afternoon into the evening. Motorists and residents should use caution, especially in areas prone to falling branches or brief power disruptions.
