Wakefield, VA – Residents across eastern Virginia and the Maryland Eastern Shore are seeing a fast-changing weather day Friday, as widespread rain and gusty winds this morning give way to clearing skies, cooler temperatures, and strong winds this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

Forecasters say steady rain, heavy at times, is affecting much of the region through the early morning hours, accompanied by gusty winds of 30 to 40 mph. These conditions may create ponding on roads and reduced visibility for the morning commute.

By late morning into the afternoon, rain is expected to move out quickly, with rapid clearing developing from west to east. However, the break in rain will be replaced by strong west to northwest winds. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph are expected across much of eastern Virginia, with higher gusts of 40 to 50 mph possible along the Eastern Shore.

Temperatures will fall through the day, settling into the 40s by afternoon, giving the region a noticeably cooler feel compared to recent days. The gusty winds may make it feel colder, especially in open and coastal areas.

By tonight, skies will be clear and cold, with winds gradually diminishing after sunset. Overnight lows are forecast to drop into the mid-20s inland, while coastal areas remain slightly milder, with lows in the low 30s.

Officials urge residents to secure loose outdoor items, use caution when driving high-profile vehicles, and be prepared for sharply colder conditions overnight, especially after a wet day.
